Farmers markets are found in many different location and comes in many different sizes. To give one the title of most famous is pretty hard as markets offer different fare. However, here are a few considered the world’s best, Mercado De La Marced in Mexico City, Mexico, Castries Market in Castries, St. Lucia, Mercat De La Boqueria in Barcelona, Spain, Mercato Coperto in Modena, Italy, and Kashgar Sunday Market in Kashgar, China. In the US, Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Fransico and Zingerman’s Delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Michigan made the list.
The Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market in San Francisco is widely considered to be the best farmer’s market in the country. One can find famous chefs, famous farmers, and 25,000 visitors weekly – that’s a lot for being open 3 days a week! The market is funded by the Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) and offers a variety of organic produce and goods. It also offers cooking classes, farm tours, a forum to learn about growing food, and best of all, a variety of chef-made artisan foods!
The Farmer’s Market in LA calls itself the Original Farmer’s Market because it was one of the first established in the US. Now, it’s open every day at 3rd and Fairfax.
The Portland Farmer’s Market is also considered very popular – 22,000 shoppers and 250 vendors weekly. The Union Square Greenmarket in NYC is the most popular of the 40+ farmers markets in NYC. The Forsyth Farmers Market in Savannah, Georgia is well known and accepts food stamps as part of the Healthy Savannah initiative.
