Good question, Vivid Green. The largest and most expensive renewable energy project is the Roscoe Wind Farm in Texas and was completed in October 2009. It contains 627 turbines that produce up to 781.5 megawatts, enough power to supply at least 230,000 homes. The project cost more than 1$ billion. Just behind it is the Horns Rev 2 project, a wind farm off the coast of Denmark that cost 1$ billion.
Here is a picture of the Roscoe Wind Farm:
Hope this helps!
Probably the most expensive single renewable energy project considered is Japan’s space-based solar farm. Japanese government announced such plans in September 2009, to produce 1 GW of energy that powers around 300000 homes for $21 billion.
The government is collaborating with several industries to develop new technology within four years that can beam electricity back to Earth without the use of cables. They plan on achieving with 4 square km of solar panels. First small scale space tests are projected to take place in 2015.
