The main barrier to wide-spread use of solar power has been how expensive the silicon used for the panels is. There are cheaper alternatives (for instance polymer and dye-sensitized panels), but they are also vastly less efficient. The same goes for cheaper silicon: it’s less efficient than monocrystalline silicon, the most expensive form of silicon. However, IBM has recently unveiled a solar cell that is both more efficient and less expensive than other cells on the market today, which hopefully will make solar power more easy to implement.
