The best thing to do is contact your local pharmacy or doctor’s office to see if they are accepting old meds. Many of these places now offer programs to take back your old medications. If they do not, they may know of somewhere that does. Also check with your local recycling center (Earth911.com and 1800Recycling.com can help you find a center that accepts the medications too, but these sites may not be completely updated).
If you can’t find anywhere near you that will accept them, you should take them out of the original containers, mix them with something no one wants, like old coffee grounds, and put them in a completely sealable container before throwing away. Don’t flush your meds!
