The Honda Civix GX, Nissan Leaf, and Smart Car are currently the most eco-friendly cars in the US. More and more cars of these sorts are being developed so this is likely to change in the near future.
Electric cars have the potential to produce zero emissions, but unfortunately their “upstream” emissions may be quite high if they are carging during daylight hours and using electricity from coal. However, charging the batteries at night works well because the power companies do not shut down their generators and all that electricity would go to waste anyway. Currently, there is enough electricity to charge all the electric vehicles on the road during off-peak hours. Also, there is some thought that electric cars could be used as backup energy storage units to put electricity back into the grid during peak hours.
