Many people building in the tropics use cement and tin for their houses. However, gypsum (sheet rock) and wood are also available and readily used. In the tropics, it is warm and people strive to keep their houses cool. One way to do this is to use native palm leaves for the roof. Palms grow quickly making their leaves a renewable resource. The palms do not rot or break down quickly and they provide a nice cool covering for houses, pavilions, and porches. Bamboo is another great resource that allows for air flow and comfortable temperatures. Cement floors are cool and easy to clean.
