It is easiest to determine the efficiency of homes based on the LEED certification scale. For a home to be considered “green,” it should be LEED certified. LEED certification is based on the point system, which awards points for different environmental aspects of the home; from the sustainability of the building site to the indoor environmental quality of the home. The most efficient home earns a “Platinum” rating: between 90-136 points out of 136 possible points. Below Platinum is the Gold rating, then Silver, with 60-74 points. Without earning a Platinum, Gold, or Silver rating, a home can still be LEED certified if it earns at least 45 points.
