Reverse Osmosis is the most energy efficient technique of getting salt out of salt water so far. Other groups are working on more efficient techniques, but these are likely to come with a hefty price tag.
Siemens is currently researching more energy-efficient techniques of doing this, using deionization, which would purportedly save 50% more energy compared to conventional reverse osmosis techniques. Not sure when it will enter the market.
Usually, deionized water is used in labs or in science/ mdeical fields, as it is fairly free of contaminants.
Straight deionized water is not necessarily all that good for you, because everything-minerals, etc.-is taken out.
Not sure if that helps!
