What is the most effective way of irrigation in the United States?

This would depend on the area you are living in. Dry areas require more extensive systems with sprinklers, pumps, etc, because the porous land will not hold water close enough to the surface. In more temperate zones, simply digging a ditch may be enough to channel water into the thicker sub-soil which will hold the water. The most effective way would be to use gravity to channel water from a stream down into a flat area with channels dug to help move the water over the croplands. In other words, the way mother nature has been growing plants for a long time.
