Natural cork wine stoppers are actually the most eco-friendly option for winemakers since they are all natural and biodegradable. Corks come from the bark of cork oak trees that grow in mainly Portugal and Spain. Europe and Australia have a thriving cork recycling program and this is also gaining some stride in the United States as well. Although the majority of winemakers are still using cork stoppers, more winemakers are turning to plastic screw caps because they are cheaper to make than importing in natural cork.
