Well, you’ll want to look for lotions without parabens, pthalates, mineral oil, or DEA/TEA/MEA. These ingredients are all either carcinogenic or have other negative effects on our environment. For example, mineral oil is sourced from petroleum, and parabens are having estrogenic effects on fishes in waterways. Unfortunately, labeling procedures for “organic” and “natural” body care products aren’t very well-moderated, so your best bet to find the best eco-friendly lotion is took for lotions that don’t include those ingredients.
You can also make your own lotions, using vegetable oils and other natural ingredients. Here’s a good guide!
The most green lotions are those made with 100% natural materials, but also materials that are sustainable. Cocoa butter, shea butter, vegetable glycerin, beeswax, soy wax, and oils like olive oil, almond oil, sunflower seed oil, etc. are examples of good, natural materials. As jvanderlee has said, you can easily make your own natural lotions, and there are tons of recipes available on the internet.
When looking for a green lotion, you have to make sure that the company you are buying the lotion from uses green production techniques. Caldrea Lotion makes truly green products. It is made with Shea butter, Aloe Vera, and glycerin. The lotion itsself is biodegradable and packaging is recyclable. Caldrea also practices green techniques at the company and tries to be eco-friendly.
To make your skin soft rubbing vitamin e oil is one, eco-friendly way. Jason’s Naturals sells these for a decent price. To lighten your skin a bit use aloe vera gel. However, these brands are also eco friendly: Avalon Organics, Say Yes to Carrots (fairly new), Everyday Naturals Earth Bunny Garden Selects, One Love Organics and Burt’s Bees.
