One project that must be mentioned is the Three Gorges Dam in China. In order to build the dam, half of the areas tree cover had to be removed. The removal of the tree combined with rising water levels in the reservoir led to more than 95 major landslide events in 2010. Experts estimate 40 million tons of sediment are being discharged into the Yangtze river annually as a direct result of the dam.
Also, the reservoir flooded 403 square miles of area upstream which was home to more than 1,300 archaeological sites and displaced 1.24 million people. The shear size of the dam and adverse effects on the local ecosystem most certainly puts it in the running for most destructive land development project.
