There are unfortunately lots of harmful pollutants but lead is particularly problematic. Lead contaminates the ocean when toxic waste is dumped and can cause birth defects, brain damage, kidney problems, slow growth in children, and much more. The problem with lead is that it in never leaves the bodies of the fish that consume it, so it accumulates as it moves up the food chain and is ultimately consumed by humans in seafood. Lead comes from a number of items that are dumped, including paint, pipes, and lead batteries. If we value our own health and want to keep ocean’s ecosystem alive, we really should recycle these items!
