The most dangerous is coal mining. Tony Oppegard, a former top federal and Kentucky mine safety official, stated to the Seattle Times that coal mining is “the most dangerous type of mining there is.” This is because of a method known as pillar retreat mining; one of the biggest causes of mining accidents and deaths, Seattle Times said.
Miners leave pillars of coal underground to support the roof from collapsing while mining. These coal pillars are then strategically collapsed in order to retrieve their weight in coal. This method is dangerous, but yields a rewarding sum of coal up to 60%.
