One of the most dangerous diseases a dog can contract is called Distemper. Thankfully, vaccines have greatly reduced the prevalence of this disease, but without a vaccination it can be very deadly for canines. Distemper is the result of a the canine distemper virus, which affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system of the dog. It is an incurable disease, is highly contagious, and puppies are most vulnerable to infection. It is deadly in about 80% of puppies, and about 50% of older dogs without proper immunization.
