The most dangerous thing you will probably encounter in a stream (assuming that there is no factory pouring toxic sludge into it) is most likely bacteria and disease from animals in the environment. For example, an animal may defecate into a stream, or die in a stream. The bacteria from the feces or the rotting corpse will then contaminate the water and can cause you to become very sick if you drink the water.

The most dangerous chemicals come from abandoned or neglected mining operstions.  These can include arsenic, lead, mercury, and sulfuric acid.  If there are no fish or aquatic insects a stream, it may be contaminated with harmful elements leached out of rocks that were exposed to surface or underground water during mining activities.
