Coal is most damaging to the earth because it releases much more than just carbon dioxide. It also releases large amounts of sulphur dioxide, which causes acid rain. Other emissions such as black carbon can cause respiratory problems, especially if one lives near a coal plant. Due to modern pollution standards, many coal plants have installed scrubbers and other devices to clean up their emissions. However, these often cost the company a lot of money, so coal companies will not install pollution-control devices without government mandates.
