I couldn’t find a site that would say what the MOST common cactus is, but I would guess it is the prickly pear. Here is some supporting evidence.
Prickly pears have 12 different species and at least one is found in every desert in the American Southwest.
They produce fruits and branches that are eaten. They are also used in jellies, candy, juice and syrups. Generally we sell and eat items that are very common and easy to grow.
