The most common type of berry consumed in the world is the strawberry. However, from country to country, other berries are more common. In the United States, for example, the blackberry is the most commonly grown berry.
Ironically, strawberries aren’t actually a true berry, they’re an “accessory fruit”. This is a botanical distinction, based on the fact that “true berries” have the seeds embedded inside the flesh of the fruit. Whereas accessory fruit, like strawberries, have the seeds embedded on the outside, and the seeds are actually the fruit in the form of achenes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berry#Compound_fruits)
Note: Blackcurrants are probably the most consumed “true berry” in the world, mostly due to their predominance in the UK.
