One would guess that Carbon is the most common element. It is in EVERYTHING including you! However it is not the most common. On earth, oxygen is the most common element. It makes up 47% of the earth’s mass. In the Universe, Hydrogen is the most common at about 75%.
Depends what exactly you mean by common. In the universe, it is hydrogen, composing almost 75% of all matter, followed by helium and then oxygen. If you mean the most common in the earth’s crust, then the answer is oxygen. Within the Earth’s atmosphere, the answer is nitrogen, which is 4 times more abundant than oxygen.
Nitrogen comprises 78% by volume of the total atmosphere.
