The most common colors seen during sunsets are red and yellow. This is because during a sunset, sunlight enters the atmosphere at a lower angle and must pass through more atmosphere before being seen by an observer. Shorter wavelengths of light like violet and blue, which are seen during the day when the sun is high in the sky, are scattered away by dust and gas particles in the atmosphere. Red and orange wavelengths are more difficult to scatter, so those are the colors more likely to reach an observer at sunset.
The most common colors of sunsets are often yellow, orange, and red. Since “red has the longest wavelength of any visible light, the sun is red when it’s on the horizon, where its extremely long path through the atmosphere blocks all other colors.”
