In 2010 the main cause of coal mining deaths was ignition or explosions followed by powered haulage and roof falls. The main cause of metal/non-metal mining deaths can be attributed to powered haulage followed by falling or sliding material and machinery.

The most common cause of fatalities in mining is caused by fly-rocks, workers getting too close to explosions or blasts and being fatally harmed.
