Oral clefting is the most common birth defect in the US. It occurs in about 1 in every 700 births. 3 out of 100 babies are born with a major birth defect. There are over 4000 major birth defects.
About one in every 33 babies is born with some sort of birth defect, which can be either internal or external and may range in severity. The most common type of birth defect is a heart defect, affecting about 1 in every 100-200 babies born. This accounts for about one-fourth to one-third of the birth defects throughout the world, and some can be very serious and result in the death of the infant.
