The most abundant type of plants in the ocean is algae. Algae is a broad category which includes really large kelp to microscopic phytoplankton. What distinguishes algae from other marine plants or land plants is that they are non-flowering, do not produce seeds and do not have roots, stems or leaves. They make do by attaching themselves to rocky surfaces or floating along with the currents.
