What is a mood food?

Scientists have done studies that have shown that the food we eat can play a significant role in our mood.  Not sure where you heard the term or how it was used but a mood food could be used to describe a food that has a specific effect on one’s mood.  You may have also heard the term comfort food.  This came from the idea that certain foods that we eat make us feel better, either because they’re physically altering the chemistry in our brain, or because we associate them with positive memories or experiences.

Examples of a few different ways food alters your mood:

    • Protein sources (fish, chicken, red meat, beans, nuts, cheese) are said to boost mental alertness because they increase the neurotransmitters in your brain that are responsible for alertness and energy
    • Carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice) are said to help relax and de-stress individuals because they trigger the release of insulin which triggers another complex release of neurotransmitters, eventually leading to the release of serotonin, a chemical in the brain responsible for producing a sense of calm
    • Caffeine, although mostly known for its negative side effects, has been shown to have a positive impact on those suffering from mild depression.  A cup a day has been shown to have positive impacts on individuals suffering from depression that does not need medical attention
