Modern sustainability is simply ensuring that the actions you take and the things you use are as environmentally friendly as can be. For instance, if you must drink soda, you would recycle the can or bottle. If you must print out a 3,000 word essay, you would single space, use a smaller font and narrow margins, and print on both sides of the paper. It is utilizing the resources you have while wasting as little as possible.

Sustainability is ensuring that our current resources last for future generations, but it is also a paradigm shift in the way we do things. Sustainability aims to balance human welfare and health, economic prosperity, and environmental integrity. This is known as the “Triple Bottom Line”. It is a very holistic discipline. An example of a sustainable solution for a business may be to work with a local supplier for office supplies. This helps the planet by reducing energy used in shipping. It helps the community by keeping money in the local economy, and it helps the business save money in shipping costs.
