The mechanical battery (or flywheel energy storage) accelerates a rotor (flywheel) to an extremely fast speed and maintains the energy in the system as rotational energy. When the energy is removed from the system, the flywheel’s rotational speed is lowered as result of the principle of conservation of energy. Energy is added to the system as results in an increase in the speed of the flywheel.
