Until early this month, Mayor Bloomberg of New York City was pursuing one of the most far-reaching plans in the country to reduce a city’s greenhouse emissions. The New York mayor had introduced a plan to curb New York’s contribution to global warming, which would require buildings of a certain size to assess methods of becoming more energy efficient, and for the owners to pay for some of the changes to increase efficiency. The plan would have created an estimated 19,000 construction jobs. In response to industry pressure, however, Mayor Bloomberg has drastically weakened his plans for a more sustainable city. As a result, the majority of the green jobs that would have been created are no longer likely to materialize.
