They’re also very persistent, and can remain in bodies for a long time. Dioxins come mainly from burning chlorine-based compounds with hydrocarbons, something that happens in some industrial sites such as incinerators, paper mills that use chlorine bleach, and factories that create certain kinds of fertilizers. Dioxins are carcinogenic and exposure can lead to developmental and reproductive problems, as well as damage to the immune system and hormonal systems.
