Egg laying mammals are called Monotremata. There are only 5 known species of monotremata: the duck billed platypus and four species of echidna, also known as spiney anteaters. These animals all live in either Australia or New Guinea. Monotremata is not a diverse group of animals and little fossil information has been discovered about them. This small group of mammals lays eggs, but still feeds their young with milk they produce and have many other characteristics of other mammals.
