Nuclear energy is created by the fission of uranium atoms. It is called “nuclear” because neutrons are shot into the nucleus of the uranium atoms causing it to release two neutrons that in turn hit to or atoms and so on. The energy that is releases by these microscopic reactions are actually release a great deal of energy that lies dormant in the atom’s nucleus. This energy in turn is used to boil water which then runs turbines and produces electricity.
