What makes TNT explosive?

One reason is because it contains carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, and so when those are burned they produce highly stable substances that can release a lot of energy . Although the elements are stable, the chemicals are unstable. The nitro groups are packed very close together and don’t require much to break the bonds and create the explosion. This is a very brief summary and you can view the full article in my citation.

It is explosive for two reasons. It has the elements carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, which when these materials are burned, their strong bonds break and release a lot of energy. Second, it is chemically unstable. Check the link for more info.
