It isn’t, in the southern hemisphere.
Because the earth’s axis is tilted and not straight up and down, different sections of the earth are exposed to different angles of sunlight. Also, daytime is longer during the summer than the winter; this allows more sunlight to hit the earth and warm up the surface.
