Biodegradable is loosely defined as anything that can be broken down by bacteria and other microorganisms in a timely fashion.

Biodegradable means that something will break down or degrade by biological processes. Enzymes and microbes are often responsible for breaking down complex materials into their simpler parts and compounds. We often take ‘biodegradable’ to mean ‘environmentally friendly’ though it is important to remember that there is no legal definition for the term biodegradable and therefore no set standards to ensure that a product is as biodegradable as it claims.
