What makes a snake go so fast?

Is it because of its hollow bones

Snakes move by means of lateral undulation.  They flex to the left, then the right, and the result waves them forward.  While it looks like the snake is moving very quickly, they actually only move twice the length of their bodies per second.

The world’s fastest snake is the Black Mamba, which redlines at about 12 mph.  That’s the speed you’d have to run if you were shooting for a 5 minute mile — not extremely fast, but you better get out of its way!  They grow up to 14 feet long, and slither full speed with their head held about 4 feet off the ground.  They’re also very agressive and extremely poisonous, and for that reason, they’re the most feared and respected snakes in Africa, and one of the most dangerous in the world.
