Atmospheric brown smog is composed of automobile exhaust, chemicals, power plant pollution and soot from burned organic matter and fossil fuels These brown smog clouds regularly descend upon such cities as Seoul, New Delhi, Tehran, Bangkok and Cairo. Amazingly, the very same brown cloud mass has reportedly drifted as far east as California.
The brown smog is called photochemical smog and it happens because of the action of sunlight on air pollutants. It’s a pretty complex chemical reaction, but it’s a reaction from pollutants like CO, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen that react with UV rays. Sunlight maximizes the color around mid-day and evenings, particularly in the summer and fall months.
