Plastic is dishwasher safe depending on the materials that are used to manufacture it. Many plastics are dishwasher safe, but there are other types of plastics that are heat-sensitive and may melt and warp. Low-density polyethylene is dishwasher safe. You can determine the type of plastic you have by looking at the number indicated in the triangular recycling ring located on the plastic item. Low-density polyethylene is referred to as No. 4 on the recycling labeling. The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) website provides a detailed list of plastic types (http://www.ides.com/resources/plastic-recycling-codes.asp).
