What makes a plastic biodegradable?

Biodegradable plastics are those that are either composed of material that can naturally be deccomposed (bioplastics) or those that are made of petroleum and are capable of decomposing themselves in the presence of heat and moisture.  Bioplastics, for many reasons are the preferred of the two.  Aliphatic polyesters are naturally biodegradable and are typically mixed with potato or corn to produce a plastic that is both environmentally friendly and more cost-efficient.
