The advantage of the Passivhaus standards is that they require a house to be built in such a way that it requires only minimal (if any) heating and cooling. Rather than relying on climate control systems to regulate the temperature in a house, houses built according to Passivhaus standards us a range of building methods to naturally control the temperature. Specifically, the Passivehaus standards require that houses be well-insulated and airtight througout. In order to meet the standards a house must use 15 kWh or less per square meter per year for both heating and cooling.
