what makes nuclear waste so dangerous?

First of all you have to consider that the entire nuclear process is a dangerous one – from mining the uranium to producing plutonium to disposing of the waste. When disposing of the waste in particular, the biggest danger is radioactivity that can harm the air, water, land, plants and animals. There is no safe way to dispose of radioactive waste and unfortunately the waste will remain radioactive until it naturally decays. A particularly dangerous radioactive element is Plutonium-239 that “will remain hazardous for at least 240,000 years.” Click the citation below for more sadly mind blowing facts about the dangers of nuclear energy.
