What makes a mirage?

Mirages are created when light is bent in a process called light refraction.  The light is bent as it passes from one medium to another.  This occurs when there is a rapid shift in air density in the atmosphere.  This can be seen when an asphalt pavement heats up the air directly above it creating a shift in air density near the ground.
