What makes meat production so bad for the environment?

The biggest reason meat production is bad for the environment is the amount of resources that goes into raising a calorie of animal protein. First we have to grow the feed, usually using conventional farming methods which involve petroleum based fertilizers and the like. Then the animals are usually kept in big concentrated feed lots which contaminate the soil and water. Then the meat has to be shipped large distances ect ect. All of this and we could use the land to grow crops for human consumption and feed more people more efficiently with less resources.
