Vermont and Maine are leaders in regulating polluting run off because of new legislation that has recently been passed in each state. The legislation aims to reduce the amount of polluted run off that ends up in streams after heavy storms. What is unique about the legislation is that it is being applied to structures, including residences, which were built before the law was passed. Many residents and businesses will be forced to take precautionary measures to make sure that polluted water from their property is not reaching streams. This may require them to create holding ponds or to plant grass in an area where polluted run off water may go.
