What makes incandescent lights so inefficient?

They are inefficient because 90% of the energy emitted by the bulbs is through heat rather than light.  That is why it lights in the first place; an electric current passes through a filament which heats it to a temperature that produces the glow you see.

CFLs, on the other hand, use 75% less energy and produce 75% less heat.
