What makes a forest sustainable?

Sustainable forestry was an idea brought back to America from Germany at the turn of the century by Gifford Pinchot. In order to maintain a sustainable forest, management must adhere to a wide variety of environmental, social and economic criteria to assure the health of the forest and the economy simultaneously. The main crux is not to remove more trees than are growing. It also includes selective cutting, that is choosing, the older trees that produce more while allowing the younger trees to grow and mature. As a tree gets older, it keeps growing so it is best to cut down older trees because you get one tree but more wood than if you had cut a younger tree down.
