What makes fabric stretch?

It depends on the type of fabric.  Cotton will stretch from the pull of gravity, espcially after you hang up clothes to dry, the weight of the water will pull it down.  There are different types of fabric including spandex that gives more of a stretch.

Knit fabrics stretch much more than woven ones, which is why most clothing that needs to stretch, such as socks or form-fitting workout clothes, is made out of knit fabric. Knit fabrics are made from a series of interlocking stitches, while woven fabrics are made from warp and weft threads at right angles.
