What makes fabric softener bad for the environment?

Many commercial fabric softeners contain known carcinogens such as benzyl acetate, chloroform, and limonene. They also contain chemicals that effect the Central Nervous System including Alpha Terpineol, Benzyl Alcohol, and Camphor. Besides the human health effects, its important to protect the environment around us as well. This is why we should eliminate these chemicals from our homes and to use non-toxic fabric softeners. Vinegar and baking soda are each alleged to perform this function nicely.
