Not all E. coli is dangerous. It is a common bacteria found in the gut that helps to digest foods. E. coli O157:H7 is the strain to worry about. What makes it so dangerous is that it mimics many other bacterial infections and many of the over the counter drugs actually make the infection worse. Many of the symptoms of the infection are not realized by the sufferer. The infection can not be treated and is handled by the body over the course of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally most people can handle it well. The main concern is for children and the elderly.
E coli is naturally inside a human’s intestinal tract. The bacteria becomes harmful when a foreign strain of E coli comes in contact, which happens when a food or drink consumed is contaminated. The E coli that has been receiving the most attention lately due to the illness associated with it enterohemorrhagic group that causes hemorraging. Just like there are different species of animals, there are different species of E coli bacteria, most of which are not harmful to humans, but some of which are unfortunately harmful.
