Cotton grown using the conventional methods of industrial agriculture is one of the energy and water intensive crops produced on a large scale in the US. A single cotton T-shirt requires about a third of a pound of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, including highly toxic chemical compounds. In addition, the making of just one pound of cotton consumes 925 gallons of water. Fortunately, you can buy organic cotton clothing, which has a much smaller environmental impact to produce. Alternatively, you can buy clothing second-hand, reducing the need for new materials to be manufactured.
