A sustainable building, or green building is an outcome of a design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. It is believed that green buildings should reduce the overall impact of a building on its environment. They hope that it will protect occupant health and improving employee productivity. There are many subsets and off-shoots of green building that include: natural building, sustainable design, green architecture, and energy efficient buildings.
A green building usually will have adhered to LEED’s building standards. This includes using sustainable materials, energy efficient appliances, native vegetation and have guidelines that will conserve energy and water.
